Expressive Painting: Autumn Botanicals in Watercolor
Celebrate the changing of the seasons as we explore the process of creating a loose, intuitive watercolor and ink painting of autumn botanicals!
In this beginner-friendly class, Heather will share techniques for capturing the essence of a vibrant seasonal botanical by emphasizing movement and spontaneity over realism. We’ll focus on ways to simplify the subject and be inspired by the intermingling of the watercolor pigments on the page, letting go of the need to depict every detail.
Beginning with some warm up exercises to become more comfortable with our tools and the behavior of water, pigments, and ink, we’ll then create a colorful painting that combines loose watercolor with the structure of ink. All materials will be provided, and you’ll leave with a completed painting as well as principles that will enable you to create future paintings in this expressive style.
This class is designed as a standalone course but also works beautifully in tandem with the second course in the series, “Expressive Painting: Autumn Botanicals in Ink.” Each course takes a different approach to the same topic, and participating in both would serve as a more comprehensive two-part workshop on how to combine these versatile media.
Come enjoy this relaxed time of painting together as we exercise creative intuition and explore the exciting ways that watercolor and ink can interact.

Expressive Painting: Autumn Botanicals in Ink
Celebrate the changing of the seasons as we explore the process of creating a loose, intuitive watercolor and ink painting of autumn botanicals!
In this beginner-friendly class, Heather will share techniques for capturing the essence of a vibrant seasonal botanical by emphasizing movement and spontaneity over realism. We’ll focus on ways to simplify in ink and be inspired by the intermingling of the watercolor pigments on the page, letting go of the need to depict every detail and yet still conveying the exquisite nature of our subjects.
Starting with some exercises to become better acquainted with our tools, we’ll then create an ink drawing that conveys the defining qualities of our chosen subject, finishing with evocative touches of watercolor that enhance the effects of the ink. Techniques for enhancing contrast and using background watercolor washes to add texture and interest will help create a gorgeous final painting that fuses the delicacy of ink with the energy of watercolor.
This class is designed as a standalone course but also works beautifully in tandem with the first course in the series, “Expressive Painting: Autumn Botanicals in Watercolor.” Each course takes a different approach to the same topic, and participating in both would serve as a more comprehensive two-part workshop on how to combine these versatile media .

East Asian Brush painting consists of many styles of painting that originated in China centuries ago and spread throughout Japan and Korea. In this class, you will learn how to use the Four Treasures- the brush, the ink, the inkstone and paper. About the teacher: Nga Bui Katz (pronounced Na) was born in Vietnam. She has spent the last sixty years in the United States, now calling Charlottesville home. Nga spent seven years learning Japanese art in Tokyo, then studied Chinese Art at the Honolulu Acadamy of Art, and studied for a decade with Master Henry Wo Yue Kee. Nga says, “Being an artist is to be in a dream world. Make a Mini-Zine with Jess!
A zine is a self-published, handmade, or small press booklet that is distributed for the purpose of sharing ideas, experiences, and perspectives, often of historically marginalized or underrepresented subcultures. Zines come in many different shapes and sizes and can be about ANYTHING, but it’s especially satisfying to make an 8-page mini-zine from ONE piece of printer paper.
Join local artist and zine-maker Jess Walters for an interactive workshop “How to Make A Mini-Zine.” We will explore a variety of examples of zines, learn some of Jess’ favorite collage techniques, and pick up some copying tips and tricks before transforming an ordinary piece of paper into a creative work of art.
Jess will demonstrate how to fold a single sheet of paper into an 8-page mini-zine and materials and prompts will be provided* for folks to fill out their zine with writing, stickers, drawings, and/or collage. Take your zine home, make copies to share with friends, or bring some to swap at Charlottesville ZineFest, coming up on October 18, 2025 at JMRL Central Library.
Jess Walters (they/them) is a local artist, advocate, and independent scholar. Their work focuses on the intersections of art and health and they strategize to improve accessibility accommodations in creative and cultural arts spaces to cultivate inclusive opportunities for community engagement. Walters is an Arts Research Fellow at the UVA Center for Health Humanities and Ethics, a Board Certified Patient Advocate (BCPA) and a founding member of Charlottesville ZineFest. Their artwork has been featured at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, Second Street Gallery, and New City Arts’ Welcome Gallery.
*All instructions and materials required zine-making will be provided, including items from Jess’ personal collage library. However, if participants would like to bring photographs, books, magazines, or other paper materials specific to their interests or passions to collage with, they are invited and encouraged to do so.
