Autumn Collage in Watercolor and Ink: Mushrooms
Discover the possibilities of using collage in loose, expressive mixed media art with us as we create a dynamic watercolor and ink painting of autumn botanicals!
In this relaxing, creative class, Heather will share techniques for using watercolor, ink, and collage to create paintings alive with texture. We’ll be inspired by the intermingling of the watercolor pigments on the page, forming our own papers that we will then use for collage. After forming the basic structure of our compositions through collage of these papers, we’ll then use both watercolor and ink to add movement and depth to our mixed media paintings.
Perfect for both beginners and seasoned artists alike, this class will help you loosen up your approach to painting, become inspired by “happy accidents,” and learn how to use texture as a tool for creating compelling pieces. In the process, we’ll also discuss some basic techniques for using watercolor washes, creating color schemes that work, and designing strong compositions using the various materials at our disposal. All necessary materials will be provided, but you’re also welcome to bring your own art supplies to practice if desired. You’ll leave not only with a beautiful finished painting, but also with lots of ideas to continue the fun on your own!
This class can be a standalone course but also works beautifully in tandem with the other “Autumn Collage” class this weekend. Taking both together would enable you to dive deeper into these versatile mixed media techniques in a more comprehensive workshop.
Come join us for a time of joyful creating as we explore exciting ways to combine texture with watercolor and ink!

Make a Mini-Zine with Jess!
A zine is a self-published, handmade, or small press booklet that is distributed for the purpose of sharing ideas, experiences, and perspectives, often of historically marginalized or underrepresented subcultures. Zines come in many different shapes and sizes and can be about ANYTHING, but it’s especially satisfying to make an 8-page mini-zine from ONE piece of printer paper.
Join local artist and zine-maker Jess Walters for an interactive workshop “How to Make A Mini-Zine.” We will explore a variety of examples of zines, learn some of Jess’ favorite collage techniques, and pick up some copying tips and tricks before transforming an ordinary piece of paper into a creative work of art.
Jess will demonstrate how to fold a single sheet of paper into an 8-page mini-zine and materials and prompts will be provided* for folks to fill out their zine with writing, stickers, drawings, and/or collage. Take your zine home, make copies to share with friends, or bring some to swap at Charlottesville ZineFest, coming up on October 18, 2025 at JMRL Central Library.
Jess Walters (they/them) is a local artist, advocate, and independent scholar. Their work focuses on the intersections of art and health and they strategize to improve accessibility accommodations in creative and cultural arts spaces to cultivate inclusive opportunities for community engagement. Walters is an Arts Research Fellow at the UVA Center for Health Humanities and Ethics, a Board Certified Patient Advocate (BCPA) and a founding member of Charlottesville ZineFest. Their artwork has been featured at the Virginia Museum of History and Culture, Second Street Gallery, and New City Arts’ Welcome Gallery.
*All instructions and materials required zine-making will be provided, including items from Jess’ personal collage library. However, if participants would like to bring photographs, books, magazines, or other paper materials specific to their interests or passions to collage with, they are invited and encouraged to do so.

Expressive Watercolor and Ink: Autumn Mushrooms
What better conveys the warm autumnal spirit than fungi? Come embrace all of the cozy fall feels with us as we create a loose, intuitive watercolor and ink painting of mushrooms!
In this beginner-friendly class, Heather will share techniques for capturing the essence of various mushrooms by emphasizing movement and spontaneity over realism. We’ll focus on ways to simplify the subject and be inspired by the intermingling of the watercolor pigments on the page, letting go of the need to depict every detail.
Beginning with some warm up exercises to become more comfortable with our tools and the behavior of water, pigments, and ink, we’ll then create a painting that combines loose watercolor with the structure of ink. All materials will be provided, and you’ll leave with a completed painting as well as principles that will enable you to create future paintings in this expressive style.
This class is designed as a standalone course but also works beautifully in tandem with the first two courses in the “Expressive Painting: Autumn Botanicals” series. Expressive Painting: Autumn Botanicals in Ink
Celebrate the changing of the seasons as we explore the process of creating a loose, intuitive watercolor and ink painting of autumn botanicals!
In this beginner-friendly class, Heather will share techniques for capturing the essence of a vibrant seasonal botanical by emphasizing movement and spontaneity over realism. We’ll focus on ways to simplify in ink and be inspired by the intermingling of the watercolor pigments on the page, letting go of the need to depict every detail and yet still conveying the exquisite nature of our subjects.
Starting with some exercises to become better acquainted with our tools, we’ll then create an ink drawing that conveys the defining qualities of our chosen subject, finishing with evocative touches of watercolor that enhance the effects of the ink. Techniques for enhancing contrast and using background watercolor washes to add texture and interest will help create a gorgeous final painting that fuses the delicacy of ink with the energy of watercolor.
This class is designed as a standalone course but also works beautifully in tandem with the first course in the series, “Expressive Painting: Autumn Botanicals in Watercolor.” Each course takes a different approach to the same topic, and participating in both would serve as a more comprehensive two-part workshop on how to combine these versatile media .

Upcycled Journal Making and Beginning Book Binding
In the top five list of items any crafter might have lingering in their craft cave is unused paper and scraps of material. With that and a little bit of mat board, glue, string, and the desire to journal or keep records of all your crafts and feelings, you can make a journal of your very own.
In this class, local craft-o-logist, Rebecca, will show you how to put together a journal using up-cycled items such as fabric, paper, cardboard, and string. You will also be introduced to the art of bookbinding and go home with a journal your own and the knowledge and resources to continue your new craft.
