Teens Intro to Sewing

Students will learn the components of a sewing machine including how to load the bobbin, thread the machine, learn to sew a straight line, gain control of the sewing speed and pace, seam finishes, backstitching, pivoting and seam allowances. They’ll make a pillowcase as they learn basic machine sewing skills. We ask students bring a working machine (including power cord and pedal) but if they don’t have one, we can provide one. A sewing kit (pins, measuring tape, marking tools, fabric scissors, ruler) is suggested, but not required. Students will be provided with a materials list upon registration.

Join Ellen for an afternoon in the sun! Learn the cyanotype process, an early form of photography that uses light-sensitive paper and shadows to create stunning, bright blue images. Because this process relies on sunlight, this class is weather-dependent. If there is rain in the forecast, we will reschedule.

Please bring: Water, sunscreen, a cookie sheet, items you would like to make images of (things like lace, pressed flowers, wooden shapes, and film negatives show up really well in your final images).

Summer Sewing Sessions

You want to learn to sew (or learn more or just want to feel more confident in your skills) but can’t commit to a full series of classes on a regular basis, especially during the summer. We feel ya. Which is why we thought up the Summer Sewing Sessions 101.

On most Wednesday evenings this June, July and August from 5:30-7:00, we’ll offer an open door sewing class – sign up for the evenings you can attend and work on a project with an instructor at your own pace. Beginners will be given an assigned project, students with some experience will have the choice of an assigned project or choosing their own. We ask you bring your own machine and sewing kit, although we can supply you with one if needed.

Oh, and there will be some light, seasonable nibbles served.

Join us for this beginning class on Gelli printing, a quick and easy method of printing that uses a gelli plate, paint, and paper to easily create monoprints. In this class, you will learn to use a gelli plate to create custom paper designs for display, collage, or scrapbooking and cardmaking. Upcycling Old Textiles

Textile waste is responsible for close to 100 million tons of waste annually. Learn to reduce your footprint by upcycling and repurposing textiles, giving them new life. We’ll cover various methods of mending, altering existing clothing (including remaking items) as well as making new items out of unexpected items, like duvet covers, sheets, tablecloths and more. Some prior sewing knowledge is helpful.

The umbrella fields of animation and comics have a lot of diverse roles and skill sets underneath it. Whether the field of interest is in character design, story boarding, environmental / background design, multiple, all, or more, there’s a lot that can be learned. 

Lacking learning resources and a cohesive community, the idea behind this gathering is for helping each other learn by pooling our collective knowledge, providing other artistic perspectives, and overall form connections with those in our subsection of artistic interest.

The goals of this gathering are:

To foster and grow the artistic community for those interested in the entertainment storytelling fields of animation and comics

To provide a space for collaborative community learning

To shine a spotlight on and promote local storytelling artists
