Expressive Watercolor and Ink: Delicate Florals
Come explore the versatility of loose watercolor combined with ink by learning ways to depict the beauty of delicate florals!
In this class, Heather will share techniques for capturing the essence of a floral like lily of the valley by emphasizing movement and spontaneity over realism. We’ll focus on ways to simplify these dainty flowers in ink and be inspired by the intermingling of the watercolor pigments on the page, letting go of the need to depict every detail and yet still conveying the exquisite nature of our subjects.
Starting with some exercises to become better acquainted with our tools, we’ll then create an ink drawing that conveys the defining qualities of our chosen subject, finishing with evocative touches of watercolor that enhance the effects of the ink. Techniques for depicting white flowers, enhancing contrast, and using background watercolor washes to add texture and interest will help create a gorgeous final painting that fuses the delicacy of ink with the energy of watercolor.

Zentangle: Get Ready to Roll
Join Marian Morrill, CZT (Certified Zentangle Teacher), in "tangling" on small squares (2x2 inches) of black paper or "bijou tiles." We'll work on four different patterns ("tangles") using white Gelly Roll pens as well as both graphite and white pencils. White ink on a black tile creates beautiful studies in light. Stick and Stitch Embroidery
Join Ari (they/them) to learn how to make and use a dissolvable stick-on pattern for embroidery.
We’ll start by drawing, tracing, or stenciling an image onto the stick-on stabilizer. Then we’ll go over the lines with embroidery stitches. Ari will teach a few basic stitches, or if you are an experienced embroiderer you can go with what you know! We will have some relaxed time for stitching, then get a hands-on demo of how the stabilizer dissolves so that you can do it on your own once your embroidery is finished. Small and simple patterns can be finished in class, and if you want to do something more complex you’ll be able to wrap it up at home.
Bring a washable cloth item you’d like to add some embroidery to, or use cloth provided by the instructor. If you have an image you’d like to trace and use for a pattern, bring that along too.

Boro Inspired Visible Mending
Come learn some practical visible mending basics from instructor Ari (they/them). These techniques can help with extending the life of your clothing and fabrics while making them more unique and beautiful. Not only that, you’ll be helping to keep materials out of the waste stream!
We’ll cover patching as well as boro-style straight stitching for added strength.
Please bring your own piece of clothing or other fabric item (bag, curtain, etc) to work on. Bring something that is made of a sturdy non-stretchy material; denim or canvas works great! If you don’t currently have a damaged item, you can either bring something of your own to practice on and add some embellishment, or the instructor can provide you with a piece of fabric.
For patches, you can bring non-stretchy fabric that you’d like to use, or the instructor will have some on hand to use.
We’ll get a start on your project and send you home with the materials and know-how to complete it.

Summer Drinks in Watercolor and Ink
Is there anything more refreshing on a hot day than an icy glass of lemonade or a mojito? Come cool off as we explore the process of creating a loose, expressive watercolor and ink painting of a summer drink!
We’ll begin with practicing techniques for depicting form and texture in watercolor, emphasizing intuitive brushwork and spontaneity over strict realism. Depicting a drink in a glass may seem intimidating, but Heather will show how approachable the process can be by breaking it down into a series of steps. After gaining some confidence with creating depth through these simple exercises, we’ll then paint a lively and vibrant glass of a cold drink, finishing with ink details that add structure and character.
You’ll learn how to capture bold colors, textures, and reflections in glass as well as how to use ink to enhance the dynamic vibrancy of watercolor. All materials will be provided, and you’ll leave with a completed painting as well as principles that will enable you to create future paintings in this expressive style.
Some experience in watercolor is helpful but not required. Whether you are completely new to watercolor or are seeking to add a new way of working to your skillset, come prepared to experiment, learn a new technique, and have fun bringing to life a piece of art that truly stands out!

Embroidery on Patterned Fabric
Join instructor Ari (they/them) to learn the basics of embroidery materials and techniques while beginning a fun and flexible project. We’ll cover satin stitch, running stitch, and backstitch- possibly more depending on interest- and you’ll use your new skills to embellish a piece of printed fabric with your own stitches.
We’ll use 4 inch hoops, embroidery floss in a myriad of colors, and a choice of printed fabrics from the instructor’s stash. If you’d rather bring your own non-stretchy fabric (quilting cottons are great!) with a pattern that fits within a 4 inch circle, you are welcome to do so! Projects can be finished as a piece of hangable art using the hoop as a frame, or removed if you’d like to sew them onto something else.
Depending on the complexity of the design you choose, it is likely you will not complete the entire project in class. You’ll go home with the skills to continue embroidering on your own!

Gilded Seashells in Watercolor and Ink
Celebrate summer by learning how to create stunning paintings of seashells in loose watercolor and ink!
In this class, we’ll explore techniques for expressive watercolor, emphasizing freedom and intuition over strict realism in combining watercolor with ink elements. Easy-to-follow instructions and useful tips will help make the process of watercolor painting fun and approachable, and you’ll learn how to use color, value, ink line, and even metallic touches to create gorgeous seashell paintings.
Beginning with some warm up exercises to become more comfortable with our tools and the behavior of water, pigments, and ink, we’ll then create a vibrant seashell painting that combines loose watercolor with the structure of ink. Finally, Heather will demonstrate how to use metallic acrylic ink as a unique finishing touch. All materials will be provided, and you’ll leave with a completed painting as well as principles that will enable you to create future mixed media paintings in this expressive style.
This class builds on the techniques practiced in Heather’s previous Expressive Watercolor and Ink classes by exploring a different subject matter as well as the possibilities of using metallics as enhancement. It is also suitable as a standalone course, however: no prior experience is necessary.
Whether you are completely new to watercolor or are seeking to add a new way of working to your skill set, you’ll be able to enjoy this relaxed time of painting together as we exercise creative intuition and explore the exciting ways that watercolor and ink can interact.
