From the former Nonprofit Participants:

Amy, The Arc of the Piedmont: “This summer, I started an art studio for adults with disabilities at The Arc of the Piedmont. The Scrappy Elephant has been instrumental in helping our non-profit organization provide quality art supplies for the artists we serve. Our studio is a partner in The Scrappy Elephant’s “non profit reward program” and as such, we receive a balance each month that we can put toward procuring much-needed art materials. The Scrappy Elephant’s dual mission of environmental stewardship and creative community engagement fulfills an essential role in central Virginia. Most big cities have a creative reuse center that keeps art supplies out of landfills while also stoking and supporting creative making. The Scrappy Elephant, though small in size, is mighty in its impact. My organization believes deeply in the vibrant space Sarah Sweet has created for our community of creators, crafters, makers, and dreamers. As an artist, educator, and art program director, I can’t stress enough how important The Scrappy Elephant is to the lives of creatives of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities in our region.”

Carolyn of Wildrock: “Wildrock is a nonprofit working to connect kids to nature. Scrappy Elephant has been vitally important to us in helping us to practice our value of repurposing materials for maker space projects. Sarah’s work supports the entire community in caring for the environment while promoting healing arts!”

Melissa of the Green Adventure Project: “Being a part of the Scrappy Elephant non-profit rewards program has allowed us to expand the supplies available to our Learners. Giving them more opportunities to work with different materials and learn new techniques. We are so grateful to have the Scrappy Elephant as a resource. Sarah goes above and beyond to make sure our school has access to incredible supplies. As we practice being stewards of the Earth at school, shopping at the Scrappy Elephant is an easy example of how our families can also help the environment. We talk a lot about inspiration at GAP School. Sarah and the Scrappy Elephant show us what a difference one person can make with hard work and determination. As our Learners start to figure out who they want to be, Sarah and other changemakers in the Charlottesville community show them how powerful one person can be.”

Lara of The Virginia Discovery Museum: "Shopping at Scrappy as the Education Manager at the Virginia Discovery Museum has challenged and expanded my programming creativity. I never find quite what I think I'm looking for, but then I end up with something unexpectedly great! For example, someone had donated two big rolls of Kraftex-- a stiff, washable paper fabric I had never heard of. I wasn't sure what I'd use it for but decided to give it a try. It ended up being PERFECT for a model hand project I wanted to try-- durable enough that a bunch of rowdy six-year-olds couldn't tear the model with their enthusiasm but flexible enough to move like a puppet! Who knew? Scrappy is a boon for practical supplies too! Little hands go through a LOT of paper as they learn to hold a pencil or cut with scissors. I love that I can go to Scrappy for a wonderful array of colored drawing paper without having to worry as much about new paper waste when I recycle their "practice" paper at the end of the day!"

Rose of ARCH: “When ARCH was first founded, we embarked on securing good quality art supplies for our programs. Everywhere we went throughout Central Virginia, we heard the words "Have you heard of the Scrappy Elephant?" reverberating off the Blue Ridge. When we finally connected with Sarah, she was warm, welcoming, and excited to partner with us. Thanks to her nonprofit rewards program, ARCH has been able to offer classes that otherwise would have been cost-prohibitive to our target audience. Every time we walk into her shop, we feel welcome and inspired. Sarah always has thoughtful ideas and unexpected art supplies to share. It feels awesome to know that ARCH is helping the environment through this partnership as well.”
