AltYarniverse

Charlotte Humphreys is a self-taught fiber artist since 2022. What started as a way to fill the hours while navigating the immigration process has become a passion, and for the last year, a one-woman business, AltYarniverse. Scrappy Elephant is dear to Charlotte's heart & she hopes that you all enjoy the creations she's come up with. All items are handmade by Charlotte with love, and of course with the incredibly useful help of her tuxedo cat Luna!

Art Things by Dori

Dori Williams is the artist behind Art Things by Dori, where paper, color, and curiosity come together in joyful, wearable form. She creates one-of-a-kind collage art earrings using vintage sewing patterns, magazines, books, and found papers—many sourced from reuse spaces like The Scrappy Elephant. Her process often begins with monoprinting acrylic paint onto a variety of papers, including delicate rice paper, before cutting, tearing, and layering each piece by hand. The finished collage is adhered to a wooden base and transformed into lightweight, colorful earrings. No two are ever the same. Her love of paper and glue goes all the way back to childhood, when she used Sears catalogs and National Geographic magazines to make pictures simply for the joy of it. That same playful spirit still guides her work today, along with a belief in making time to let the mind go. Dori often works with piles of collected pieces, reaching in and letting intuition lead—choosing what grabs her rather than what feels planned.Above all, she hopes her pieces help people feel a little special: good in their own skin, delighted when someone notices, and proud to hear, “Aren’t those cool?”

Cracked Pots Studios

Paula Adkins believes in beauty with purpose. At Cracked Pots Studios, she creates functional art—handcrafted pieces that earn their place in your life. No clutter, no dust-collectors. Just thoughtfully made items that hold, carry, organize, and protect the things you love while adding handmade warmth to your daily life. Whether you're searching for the perfect gift or simply appreciate well-made goods, her work celebrates the beauty of everyday functionality.

Crystal Cuties

Audrey and Dory Doyle are a mother-daughter duo that creates Crystal Cuties - from a shared love of troll dolls and natural crystals. It all started when they were looking for a way to display more of the crystals they had found. They also had an older troll doll that was starting to lose her hair. From there, Crystal Cuties were born! In addition to these creations, you can also find Audrey’s first book written with her twin brother (called “Barry the Banana Who Wanted To Be a Berry”) on Amazon (and soon to be in local stores).

Happy Whale Pottery

Happy Whale Pottery creates handmade, functional ceramics designed to bring a little joy to everyday routines. Each piece is thoughtfully made in small batches, with an emphasis on playful details, clean forms, and timeless design. From mugs to small home goods, every item is crafted to be both useful and feel-good — handmade happy things for daily life.

Made by Emmapie Pottery

Emma Terry is a Charlottesville-based ceramic artist, teaching artist at City Clay, and member of Milkweed Clay Studio. A lifelong maker who discovered clay in 2023, Emma approaches her practice with curiosity, joy, and a deep belief that play is essential to everyday life. Working in both sculptural and functional forms, she creates pieces designed to delight: ceramic loose-leaf paper that can be used as a dry-erase tablet, whimsical pins, shrines, wonderkeepers, and other small objects that invite pause, interaction, and imagination. Her work balances durability with charm, blending clean forms, lively glazes, and inventive hand-built details. Rooted in storytelling and experimentation, Emma’s process is guided by a sense of wonder and the quiet magic of ordinary moments. Her work has been shown at Milkweed Clay Studio, City Clay, and local markets, with future 2026 gallery exhibitions at Welcome Gallery at New City Arts this August and in the Dové Gallery at Second Street Gallery in October. Through clay, Emma aims to create joyful vessels that spark connection, curiosity, and playful discovery.

Millie Winstead

This collection of creative journeys were all inspired from “fun finds” here at the Scrappy Elephant – all the materials are recycled to have a new purpose. Millie Winstead is a native Virginian; born and raised in northern Virginia, she moved to the Charlottesville area when she and her husband decided to start their family. Her passion has always been to bring people together to make their community a better, stronger place for everyone. Her career centered around working in non-profit organizations to improve affordable housing and food security. Besides spending time with her children and husband, exploring different creative outlets are what center her. From charcoal drawings to making candles to sewing projects, she loves creating and seeing things from different perspectives. She hopes you enjoy these explorations.

Very Cherry Family

We started Very Cherry Family because everyone in our family loves to make things! We're always trying out new crafts and looking for creative ways to upcycle. When the kids wanted to earn some money but weren’t old enough to get jobs, we decided to start a family business. It’s named after our always-evolving permaculture garden in Charlottesville, which we call Very Cherry Berry Farm. Setting up a craft booth at IX has been a great motivation to make time for art even when life is busy, and we love sharing the magic of lovely little handmade things. Woodcraft by Peter Richardson, sewing by Ann Marie Hohenberger, jewelry by Willow & Lucia.
