Artivist Meet-Ups

Do you want to use your creativity to change the world? All artists, activists, ARTIVISTS, creative and critical thinkers are welcome! Let’s learn from one another and support each other’s initiatives. Led by Dannie Snyder, Interdisciplinary Artivist, we'll discuss our goals, choices in tactics, what's working, what's not, how we can avoid burnout, and resources for developing our theories and practices. This is also a great space to find allies and collaborators as well as to recruit volunteers for your projects.

Dannie Snyder is an independent voter that facilitates many nonpolitical and bipartisan projects that use the arts to inspire local and global change, particularly in regards to her work in access to medicine and healthy foods. While some of her projects may lean more to the left or right, her goal is to foster a safe space where we can all be seen and heard as human beings. We all have fears and flaws, so here is a space where we encourage each other in pursuing our dreams and where we can grow, both personally and as a community.

CULTURE-JAMMING WITH TAROT CARDS (for witchy artists of any experience)
Oct
11

CULTURE-JAMMING WITH TAROT CARDS (for witchy artists of any experience)

Grab your favorite witch hat and witch’s brew and come down to Scrappy! We will get creative, clever, and critical as we culture-jam with tarot cards! Wait, what’s culture-jamming?! Culture-jamming is the practice of taking a well-known image and changing/editing it to fit your message, like a parody. Think of it as you’re “jamming” two different ideas: you’re taking something popular, like the tarot card of “The Lovers,” and you’re adding your own "spin" to it, such as making the lovers two women, thus making a personal statement about what love looks like to you. In this space, we’re encouraging you to get personal and to make new friends!

In this class, we’ll look at a few famous culture-jamming examples, like the Harry Potter Alliance, an organization that uses parody to fight for social change (rather than fighting Lord Voldemort). We will also briefly look at the art history of tarot cards and the astonishing range of visual styles. You will determine a personal message that you want to share with the world and which iconic tarot card would be best to jam with! You will get to choose your preferred art form, such as using watercolors, ink, collage, etc. We will have an array of options. You’ll leave the class with a meaningful piece of art and, hopefully, some new witchy friends!

LEVEL UP YOUR ART BY ENGAGING IN SOCIAL CHANGE- A Class on Artivism for Visual & Performing Artists (professionals & hobbyists)

LEVEL UP YOUR ART BY ENGAGING IN SOCIAL CHANGE

A Class on Artivism for Visual & Performing Artists (professionals & hobbyists)

Your art can do so much more than decorate a wall or spark a conversation. It can play a bigger part in shaping history! Social change starts with a bold vision and social movements require creative thinkers! Especially if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the news, hopeless or lost about what to do, OR if you’re feeling fiery and looking for guidance and comrades, this is the space for you! In this class, you will develop ideas in how to use your art forms and crafts to positively impact your community and change society. Through creative prompts and exercises, we will put words and images onto paper to capture our utopian ideas. No idea is too radical in this safe space! This will not be your typical vision board, collage-making, creative writing, or journaling workshop. This is the start of an epic journey. You will have the opportunity to share aloud your visions for a transformed society and then, collectively, we’ll work backwards to determine SMART goals and arts-based strategies (both visual and performative) for achieving our visions. You will leave the workshop with a piece of art JUST FOR YOU, a drafted plan for your future Artivism (Art & Activism) project, and extra resources to deepen your understanding of the history of Artivism.

Big Beautiful Blooms with Georgia O’Keeffe

Drop off your kiddos with Rebekah for two hours of art making magic!

Have you ever taken the time to really stop and smell the flowers? To notice the little freckles of color, the fuzzy pollen, the way the edges of the petals curve and curl? In this class, students will work with pastels to make a zoomed in blossom inspired by the work of Georgia O’Keeffe. Georgia wanted to bring attention to those things that we often take for granted as we busily pass by in our days -- by zooming in to flowers she pushes us to take a closer look. Students will pick a flower image and focus on the detail to render a colorful zoomed in look at a flower. In my approach to teaching kids, I will give them instruction and guidance but also allow for individual artistic decisions. You child will leave with a unique piece they should be proud of.

Circles of Color with Kandinsky

Drop off the kiddos with Rebekah for two hours of art making magic!

Have you ever wondered how two colors will look together but you didn't want to incorporate it into your piece because you were scared it wouldn't look right and would ruin the whole thing? Well, Kandinsky did lots of color experiments using simple motifs that he repeated over and over so he could see how various colors would interact with one another. It's a wonderful practice to learn how colors work together and against each other. In this class we will dive into hands on color theory as we play with circles and how different colors interact- inspired by the work of Kandinsky. We will use crayons, pastels, and watercolor to see how the various colors look when placed side by side. In my approach to teaching kids, I will give them instruction and guidance but also allow for individual artistic decisions. Your child will leave with a unique piece they should be proud of.
