Are you familiar with the Japanese tradition of folding 1,000 origami paper cranes? This is called a Senbazuru and is a symbol of healing, hope, peace, dedication, and has even been said bestow a wish upon the maker. This tradition became particularly famous through the story of Sadako Sasaki who suffered from leukemia due to radiation from the bombing of Hiroshima. She was told to fold 1,000 paper cranes and she may be healed. Unfortunately, Sadako passed away before completing but her resilience and dedication continue to spark hope in many. We can never have too much hope especially in times like these, however, hope is not the only thing we need. Dedication, perseverance, and hard work are necessary for change and Senbazuru is a perfect example of that. When we are flooded with terrible news constantly it is easy to become weary, but I ask you to think of this tradition, think of Sadako, and never stop trying for a better future.
