Worry Doll Class

  • The Scrappy Elephant (map)

ALLEVIATE YOUR POLITICAL FEARS BY MAKING YOUR OWN WORRY DOLL

We will learn a little Guatemalan history of the worry doll as we design our own “dolls,” or small colorful toys, to embody our political fears. For example, maybe the doll that will take all your fears away is actually an animal or mystical creature, not of human form. We will utilize easy traditional wrapping techniques with embroidery floss to create our precious worry dolls to place under our pillows in the upcoming days of the election. Secretly wrapped within your worry doll’s body there will be a slip of paper inscribed with your fears, so that your doll knows exactly what fears to take away from you in the night, leaving you refreshed in the morning. This classroom space is NOT meant for political debate. This space is about remembering that we are all human, that we all have fears. This is an opportunity to check in with yourself and to bond with other members of your community through this meditative and reflective craft. We will not be talking about who we are voting for, rather we’ll be talking about how we’re taking care of ourselves and others during this stressful time.
