Watercolor Textures and Mixed Media Collage: Autumn Botanicals

  • The Scrappy Elephant (map)

Discover the possibilities of using collage in loose, expressive mixed media art with us as we create a dynamic watercolor and ink painting of autumn botanicals!

In this relaxing, creative two-part workshop, Heather will share techniques for using watercolor, ink, and collage to create paintings alive with texture. In the first class, we’ll start by exploring various methods for creating fun effects with watercolor and common household items, like salt, cling wrap, paper towels, and rubbing alcohol. These experiments will form the papers that we will then use for collage.

After the papers have fully dried, we’ll use them to establish the basic structure of our compositions in the second class. We’ll then apply watercolor and ink to unify these collage elements and create mixed media paintings of autumn botanicals full of movement and depth.

Perfect for both beginners and seasoned artists alike, this workshop will help you loosen up your approach to painting, become inspired by “happy accidents,” and learn how to use texture as a tool for creating compelling pieces. In the process, we’ll also discuss some basic techniques for using watercolor washes, creating color schemes that work, and designing strong compositions using the various materials at our disposal. All necessary materials will be provided, but you’re also welcome to bring your own art supplies to practice if desired. You’ll leave not only with a beautiful finished painting, but with a collection of watercolor texture techniques at your disposal and lots of ideas to continue the fun on your own!

Come join us for a time of joyful creating as we explore exciting ways to combine texture with watercolor and ink!
